The history of Belize originated through Maya civilization, which was discovered through various artifacts and building that have been found throughout the years. The culture that was established through Maya practices was one with great interaction and is what has characterized certain regions of Belize. Today still there are descendants who continue to use the same practices as their ancestors. The ending of Maya civilization was seen when Spanish conquistadores arrived in their region and believed that they should change their “animalistic traditions”. The Maya refused to change, causing war to occur between them and the Spanish.
The Spanish did not rule for long, because the British empire fought for the rights of the country. The battle of St. George’s Caye was what established the country as a British Empire, though they were not recognized until years later. The Spanish tried to fight back and take control again yet were not successful. Once the British empire was acknowledged control was taken over settlers and government rules were enforced. Slavery was ended, though conditions continued for many years after; the owners were paid for each former slave depending on their work ability. Once full control was established they changed the name to Spanish Honduras.
The great depression affected British Honduras as well and created a shortage in employment, which was worsened through a hurricane that devastated the country. British rule was worsening economic conditions through devaluing of money and employment laws. Which caused the people to fight for their independence; which was achieved in 1981. Today Belize is viewed as a part of Guatemala and owned by Guatemala. |
These two graphs show the population growth in Belize up to the year 2010. This shows that the amount of men and women around each age group are roughly parallel. Also that the population size has increased steadily throughout the years.
